"As War Nears, Approval Ratings Rise for Bush"

What I want to know: who are they polling? I sure as hell know they haven't asked me for my approval.

"Sen. Robert Byrd: 'Today I Weep for My Country'"

"Today I weep for my country," said West Virginia Democrat Sen. Robert Byrd. "No more is the image of America one of strong, yet benevolent peacekeeper. ... Around the globe, our friends mistrust us, our word is disputed, our intentions are questioned.

"We flaunt our superpower status with arrogance," Byrd said, adding: "After war has ended the United States will have to rebuild much more than the country of Iraq. We will have to rebuild America's image around the globe."

Thank you, Senator.

I watched tonight as paramedics pulled a man from his wrecked pick-up truck and administered CPR to him in the middle of our campus' main road. After ten minutes and work with the defibrillator, they were still doing CPR while they loaded him into the ambulance and took off.

I know that I should not have stood with the rest of the crowds filling up the walkways because, like last semester's autopsies, that's going to be an image that I will not soon get out of my mind.

Today has sucked.

This war business... it just has to stop.

After a month's leave, my cousin's husband has returned to Kuwait. In a letter that he wrote, he described, among other things, how hours after his arrival, he received his smallpox vaccination.

I have to wonder, is the idea of going to war just an academic scenario in the minds of the president and his administration? Do they have any concept of what will happen to our family and friends overseas if they continue pushing for the hostile takeover of Iraq? An article entitled "Not our sons and daughters" found at Workingforchange.net brings the point home more succintly than I ever could. If you read that and then feel so inclined, go visit Not In Our Name and read the statement. I signed it last week.

This war business... how do you feel about it?

Gosh, I love my mom so much. I got a note from her this afternoon which included the following:

After we got home we noticed a bunch of feathers in the snow by the patio. There was blood too. It looked like it may have been a mourning dove that got defeathered and I suspect a hawk, not a cat. (After all, we have seen it before, twice.)

There were no tell-tale paw prints or anything around and our guys were inside all day because we were away so...that leaves an aerial assault theory as my best choice.

How many other moms out there write their daughters about predator behavior? ::hugs::

This was very cute, but beware the pop-up ads (I find more than one pop-up ad per downloaded page to be very annoying. These ones, at least, don't mess with your display or anything).

I am the sonnet, never quickly thrilled;
Not prone to overstated gushing praise
Nor yet to seething rants and anger, filled
With overstretched opinions to rephrase;
But on the other hand, not fond of fools,
And thus, not fond of people, on the whole;
And holding to the sound and useful rules,
Not those that seek unjustified control.
I'm balanced, measured, sensible (at least,
I think I am, and usually I'm right);
And when more ostentatious types have ceased,
I'm still around, and doing, still, alright.
In short, I'm calm and rational and stable -
Or, well, I am, as much as I am able.

Why? Begone, foul beasts! You have been summarily banished from this website, along with your children, your children's children, your misbegotten love-children between you and your horse, etc., etc.

And the horse thing - yeeuck. Good thing I've deleted all of that junk...

In other news... six more weeks of winter. Huzzah. Who saw that coming - come on, let's see some hands... Half my family may hail from that lovely little ville, but honestly, it's a ridiculous holiday. I remember cousins of mine going on a groundhog hunt; I'm not sure if it was to make a statement or what. But then, they got Groundhog Day off from school, so I'm not sure what they'd be complaining about... (^_^;;)

Oooo, insomnia sucks the big one. Will give sleep another go, but if it doesn't work this time, well then. It's four in the morning already - elsewise, what's the point? At least there are no classes tomorrow. Today. Yes.

Saw LotR:TTT for the second time tonight - fun! I really didn't want it to end this time around; even though the film is exponentially darker (in story and lighting) than the first one, I still loved the cinematography (butchered that spelling, didn't I?). And, despite the air feeling "close", I want to go to Fangorn Forest and meet an Ent. How much fun would that be? Anyhow, it would be better than going to lectures and writing term papers. Then again... no showers. Hmm.

Babbling! Got to stop! But first, Gladiator soundtrack = love. That's all.

The closer to zero that the number is, the weaker your personality.

You'd think that an announcement was made to a city full of seven-year-olds that there's not going to be any Christmas this year. I tried cheering up my parents by reminding them that it was cool that the team made it as far as to play for the championship; my mother responded by saying, "You're right. But the point is, they should have won." I came close - so very close - to stating that they didn't, but that would have been mean and would have meant that I could go fix myself some dinner if I want it, thank you. Sorry, but I've got less than a week left of vacation; I plan on milking it. (:^D)

Also: is there mail tomorrow with the holiday? - I'm thinking no (Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday, isn't it?). I wanted to send out my brother's comic book subscription renewal - because I'm just that nice and thoughtful of an older sister to get my brother the same thing for Christmas for the past five years. Eh.

Two more of my cousins are being sent overseas - this time to Yugoslavia with the National Guard. They were both nearly done their term of duty, too; one of them would have been out in a few more days and the other in March. Another round of bad luck, maybe? At least they are (as far as I know) going together, and it's not the Middle East. Still, that's three family members down, and I don't like that one bit.

Not much in the way of new around here. My brother went back to school yesterday, taking his baby snakehead with him. Interesting little guy (though he won't always be so little!) - and, yes, my brother bought him before snakeheads became illegal to sell in the US, thank you. I've rarely come across a boy so in love with his pet; I was entreated a couple of times to "say goodnight to Snakey" while they were both home. (:^D)

I gave blood today (go me again!), making it only the fifth time that I've given. Surprisingly, it went without a hitch - twice before I've had to be stuck in both arms to get enough blood from me, and I've bruised like nobody's business. I feel bad for having given so infrequently; being O positive, I am always certain to find that the Red Cross has sent me a letter about how much they need my blood when I come home for holidays. Maybe that should be my New Year's Resolution? It's better than having none, I think. (^_^)

I saw The Two Towers last Thursday evening - it was extremely enjoyable. I hadn't yet finished the book when I saw it, but I was still able to follow the story. Yesterday afternoon I finished The Return of the King - man! The imagery will be with me for a long time, I know. Anyhow, seeing the movie and reading the actual books helped to add some interesting-ness to my holiday, if you get my meaning (is it obvious that Sam is my favorite character? ::g::). Not being able to end it with that, I'm going to re-read The Hobbit starting tonight - it's been...twelve years since I've read it, and there's a lot I don't remember.

::shrugs:: It passes the time rather nicely as there aren't many places I feel like going to when it's cold out. Although tomorrow is supposed to be around fifty degrees, and while it may be a bit rainy, that's walking weather when it's so near to January. I don't enjoy being cooped up indoors much of the time, and a bit of fresh air is very much welcome.

My question to people, then, is what do you do in the winter and you're not at school/work/other place of obligation? Being somewhat of an outdoors-y type myself, I like to be outside in my freetime during the nicer seasons. So what do you do? (^_^)
