I was surfing around my university's file sharing site, and I found Madonna's Like a Prayer filed under 'oldies'.
Oh.
I suddenly feel so old.

06:44 p.m.
After working on a paper in the science building until 4:30 AM yesterday and sleeping only 25 minutes before getting up and getting ready for class, I was about ready to crash as hard as a body could come yesterday evening. So I slept sixteen hours last night. That leaves a lot of time for really weird dreams. The strangest one I remember went something like this: I was out shopping at a strip mall-type area with a couple of my cousins, mom, dad, and my brother. Something happened that caused us to not be able to leave the area - it was probably a snow storm or something, given recent events. Anyway, I was wandering around a corner store where I found one called 'Corn snakes and - ' something else; it's not as though people can really read in their dreams anyhow. So I thought, naturally, that it was a specialty hobby shop dealing with corn snake raising. When I walked in, though, it was a restaurant, and all of its food was made of corn snakes! I don't really remember what happened next; I probably turned around and left. I'd probably run back to find my mom because she likes snakes and, well, she just wouldn't believe it.
Man, that was strange.
Lesson learned: in the future, get sleep like normal people do.

Snow Day!!
They're predicting 7 - 10 inches today (that's a lot of snow for southern Pennsylvania). So, classes have been cancelled, allowing me to have the whole day to write that paper that's due tomorrow....
Life's good. (^_^)

Hee. I've always enjoyed this:
The following is an actual question given on a University of
Washington chemistry mid term. The answer by one student was so "profound" that
the
professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of
course,
why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well.
Bonus Question:
Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?
Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's
Law,(gas
cools off when it expands and heats up when it is compressed) or some
variant, but fell short in producing a demonstration argument. One
student, however, wrote the following:
First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So
we
need
to know the rate that souls are moving into Hell and the rate they
are
leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to
Hell,
it
will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving.
As for how many souls are entering Hell, lets look at the different
religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions
state
that
if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell.
Since there are more than one of these religions and since people do
not
belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to
Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of
souls
in
Hell to increase exponentially.
Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because
Boyle's
Law
states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay
the
same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are
added.
This gives two possibilities:
1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls
enter
Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until
all
Hell
breaks loose.
2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls
in
Hell,
then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.
Considering then the postulate presented to me by Teresa K. during my
Freshman year: that "it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep
with
you,"
and take into account the fact that over two years later, I
still have not succeeded in having relations with her; then, #2
cannot be
true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and will not freeze.
The student received the only "A" given.

It's time for the Leonid meteor shower again. Go here to find out how many you may see depending on where you live and when you look. It's supposed to be pretty spectacular once again, so try to get outside to see it!

Eeee! I just came back from seeing the Harry Potter movie (opening day, too; how do you like that? ^_^). It was wonderful, of course. My advice is this: first, bring duct tape for the annoying three-year-olds who may sit behind you and chatter incessently (and their parents, too, for that matter) and be sure to stay until the very end of the credits. You'll be pleased that you did.
It's made me want to dive right back into the third book, so I think that's what I'm going to do. ^__^

I got five hours of sleep last night, and I feel great! I'll get my insomnia beat yet, just you wait. :^) I found some good sleep-related quotes the other night here. A couple of my favorites were these:
Most people do not consider dawn to be an attractive experience - unless they are still up. ~Ellen Goodman
There is no hope for a civilization which starts each day to the sound of an alarm clock. ~Author Unknown
I'm seeing the Harry Potter movie Friday night with a couple friends; we've already ordered the tickets. What a way to end a week! (^___^)

Actually, I did go out after class today; I went to the Education Station (a store for teachers) and bought myself one of those nifty star chart wheels where you line up the day and time of night to find the constellations. I've always wanted one of those...
Yes, I am a science geek... XD

Ha! Just when I thought that genetics couldn't get any more abstract and confusing, we're introduced to transposons - the randomly hopping genes!
In other news, next semester's schedule will be consisting of three courses in teaching and field experience opportunities, nutrition (AKA "baby-biochem"), and ornithology. Ornithology = yay!
"Owls, owls, nothing but owls,
The most fantastical of fowls:
White owls from the Arctic,
black owls from the Tropic.
Some are far-sighted,
others myopic."

Several things have cheered me up, not the least of which is Skimmer's thoughts over at Corvidary - thoughts as in being thoughtful and insightful, much more so than others whom I've spoken with in the last few weeks. Actually, if you go over there, you will get a lot of insight into many different things which is one of the reasons that it's so fun to read. The quirky writing styles of Raven and Skimmer are good reason to read it, too. ^_^
I also found a copy of Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark: An Agony in Eight Fits while surfing around today; it was cheering in that it was Lewis Carroll, and I had never read it before.
Hmm...I think I'll get back to whiling away some time while waiting for a washing machine to open up. Dorm life really isn't so bad, even after all of this time. ^_^

I took time out from my day today to watch Oprah of all things. Actually, I don't think I've ever watched it before, but I'd read online that the kids who played the characters in the Harry Potter movie were going to be on. I'm glad I watched it; they were absolutely adorable. I'm re-reading the third book even now. You know, in my spare time. (;^D)
I got an email from my cousin this afternoon - her husband is being sent to Kuwait this Thursday. They only found out about it today. I can hardly imagine how hard this must be for them - and so soon after my uncle died. I really hope that everything works out. Wouldn't it be great if, somehow, those people in the higher ranks (ie. Bush and his gang) woke up tomorrow and went, "Whoa. What're we doing? Fighting's just not cool, yo," and recalled all the troops back home? Yeah, that'd be great.
I finally saw My Big Fat Greek Wedding this weekend. It, too, was adorable. It's nice having a comedy that doesn't rely on crass humor for a change. It also got me thinking about my huge family. The lady in the film had 27 first cousins. I counted up mine: 22, with the 23rd on the way. ^__^ The difference is that we don't all get together for family affairs; several of my cousins don't even live in Pennsylvania. I also finally figured out the difference between second cousins and first-cousins-once-removed. It all makes sense now. :^D
There's a large age difference between all of my cousins, too. My oldest first cousin is 47 (on my Mom's side - Mom was born an aunt), and my youngest is ... four? I think so, and she's on my Dad's side.
Isn't that interesting??? Yeah, I thought so. ^_^

Found that while surfing around. I'm determined to be a little more upbeat than I have been lately.
I saw a cabbage butterfly today, and it made me smile. ^_^

Well.
Well, well, well.
Withdrew from virology - I couldn't handle it. I realized that I bit off more than I could chew for this semester and rather than have it affect my GPA, I decided to quit while I could. It was upsetting, but, well. I know that I would be more upset by failing the course straight out.
I'm going to a funeral on Monday in Jefferson County which promises to be even more disorienting. My uncle was 91 - a good, long life, I figure, though it's still really sad. When someone has been around your whole life (he was 70 the year I was born!), you tend to get the feeling that they'll be around forever.
I'm missing genetics lab that day, too, and will have to make up a quiz and a problem set on Tuesday. Luckily, there is no calculus problem set due Tuesday night, so it shouldn't be too stressful. I really need to go over genetics this weekend - I'm really far behind (due to emotional stress? could be). I also have papers to research and write. There's no rest for the perpetual procrastinator, I suppose.
There's a saying from somewhere that goes something like this:
Small minds talk about people.
Average minds talk about events.
Superior minds talk about ideas.
By reading over all these old entries, I get the feeling that I'm in the middle category. Not much in the way of idea-discussion these days, I'm afraid.
