The science & technology building was evacuated for a bomb threat again this morning. They were just letting people back in a few minutes before eleven. My chemistry professor cancelled our lab apparently because today's experiment was supposed to be rather involved. ::sighs:: I was able to get some more studying done for my cell biology exams (yes, exams) tonight which was nice until I realized that it was lunch time and decided to get some food. So I take the ten minute walk down to the dining hall only to find that, lo and behold, it's been evacuated. (>_>) Now I'm miffed and hungry.
To quote my old roommate (who was probably quoting from a movie that I can't remember), "What's with today today?"

::sigh:: It was a bomb threat. Someone must've had an exam this morning....
Oh, wow, I just had to remind myself that I'm at university... I mean, who could tell? >_>

Can you feel the irony?
I was in class this morning where we were winding down the lecture by discussing chaos and the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle when a lady walked into the lecture hall and announced that the building was being evacuated. o_O;;
I don't know why that happened yet, but I'm interested in finding out.

Procrastinating, yet again...
I really should be studying physics....but I'm not (obviously). Did you ever take a course that scared you so much that you were afraid to open the textbook? This is one of those courses. The really sad thing is that it really shouldn't be hard. It shouldn't. It's algebra-based physics with some trigonometry thrown in (of course, I failed the trig section of pre-calc when I took it here...). I like math okay. It's logical; it makes sense. I can follow through mathematical processes. What I have trouble doing are applications -- namely, word-problems. ::shudders:: And word-problems is what physics is all about. Unfortunately, my exam is Friday, so I'm really going to have to buckle down and get some problems done during the next few days.
On a happier note, I got a fish! Yay! He's the most beautiful deep blue betta I've ever seen, and the most active, too.
I named him After You. Ayou for short (^_~). I really can't take the credit for that one - the credit goes to my friend from seventh grade, Jamie. It was just too clever to never use. ^_^

11:23 p.m.
In an effort to be more cheerful, I'm reposting my fic recs. They made me happy, anyway. And yes, Rachael, I remember quite fondly my days of reading X-Files slash - many moons ago. ::grins:: I could never bring myself to read Skinner fics, though, simply because he looked like my best friend's dad (^^;;). I think I'll always be a Krycek girl at heart. ^__^
Is it time for recs? I think it is!
Jess has been a very busy little girl. However, she hasn't been too busy to keep up on her reading. ^__^
As in the past, I am always a step or two thousand behind the rest of the crowd. I finally picked up a copy of the first Harry Potter book, and boy am I glad that I did. I love children's stories (I re-read Winnie-the-Pooh last semester - 'tis very theraputic when one is stressed out about one's chemistry exams ^^;;), and this was no exception. Actually, I forgot that it was supposed to be a children's story and just went along for the ride. Well, what more can I say? You all have read the reviews (and probably have read all of the other books, too), so I won't go on about it any longer except to say this: I want the next one. Now.
Ahem...what else is there that Jess reads? Why, fanfic, of course! I can hardly contemplate the sheer amount of fanfiction I have devoured the last six years of my life, spanning from those great days of X-Files passed and vogages for the Federation to galaxies, far, far away, to historical adventures spanning centuries where There Can Be Only One and mechs incite both elation and terror in the hearts of earthlings and colonists. Not many things can quite make my evening like a well-written work of fanfiction.
The thing with fanfiction, of course, is that I'll be inclined to read only that work whose fandom I currently am into at the time. For now, then, I really like Gundam Wing fanfic. Okay, to narrow it down, I really like stories with Heero Yuy in it because he's my favorite character. If Duo is in the story, it's a nice, added bonus. That isn't to say that the only stories I read are the ones with Heero in them, only that the majority of them do. That being said, you may want to skip these recs if you're not a GW fan. Then again, you may not. ^_^ And as a side note, please heed all warnings on the authors' pages. They're there for a reason, and I know that I don't need to tell you why. You know if they apply to you or not.
and in no particular order
It nearly seems to have been ten years ago when I read X-Files fanfic. Back then, I had a set routine for checking for updated author web pages. At the end of my list was torch's flambeau factory. Why the end? Because I was saving the very best for last. Torch has a beautiful style which simply draws a reader in. I can very fondly remember pulling several, near all-nighters reading her epic Mulder/Krycek novel Ghosts and loving every minute of it. Imagine my happiness when, years later, I found out that she has begun to write Gundam Wing stories, as well. Rather than just reccing one of her GW stories, I'll simply rec them all. They're poignant and often make one feel utterly satisfied, which is a difficult state to achieve in a reader. I trust that you will feel the same after having read them yourself.
Moving along, it ought to be obvious that I like Tin Mandigma's work by the fact that I have linked to her pages here in the blog. Granted, I have not read all of her work, but that's only because I am not yet familiar with the fandoms that many of her stories take place in. But you! You, dear reader, who have so much more experience with this whole anime phenomenon than I do, are in for a real treat. The story which comes to mind at the moment is the GW fic Referring to Stars. It consists of a philosophical conversation between Heero and Relena (and yes, I like Relena; out of all the characters, she did the most maturing during the course of the series). The story itself left a color impression on me of dark blue and gold, mixing with deep purple and the-sky-at-night, which is entirely appropriate given the subject. It's interesting how intangible things can leave such impressions, but that's a discussion from a while ago. At any rate, it was beautiful, and most certainly, thoughtful. Besides the elegant descriptions of the setting, the dialogue was incredibly refreshing to read.
An incredible author whom I found while surfing around Gundam Wing Addiction is Lasha Lee. Her GW stories run the gamut from humor to series, vignettes to series. One of the things I like to see while reading her stories is how her style has matured and improved over time. Her first work I remember reading was And I Have Touched the Sky, and while I thought the concept was interesting, it didn't really grab me right away. But I stuck with it, and am extremely glad that I have. The story really came together and I am now avidly awaiting each additional new part to the sequel Here There Be Dragons. I especially love the focus on family issues that the story has consistently revolved around - a topic which I wouldn't mind seeing in other stories, as well. Besides the epics, I also found the short stories to be highly entertaining - please check them out.
I'll stop there for now; I have so many more recommendations to make, but it's time for dinner now. ^_^ Happy reading.
